PEOSH: Indoor Air Quality Compliance / Testing
New Jersey’s Department of Labor has an Indoor Air Quality Standard in their Safety and Health standard for public employees. Schools often designate responsibility to a person to assure compliance. We have been working with school district across New Jersey as the designated person or with the designated person to ensure they have relevant information needed to act in accordance to the standard.
If any of the following statements are true, you may benefit from PEOSH Guided Indoor Air Quality Compliance / Testing
- Many stakeholders of the schools would like to know the current status of the air quality and air quality management program in our school
- We would like our designated indoor air quality person to be supported by a Certified Industrial Hygienist
- It has been a while since our written Indoor air quality program has been reviewed and we would like it to be reviewed by a Certified Industrial Hygienist
Typical PEOSH: Indoor Air Quality Compliance / Testing Services
Typical PEOSH Guided Indoor Air Quality Compliance / Testing Services include
- A Walk-through inspection of each school in your district
- A review of the written air quality compliance program.
- Air quality testing for mold, dust, VOC’s, or any other biological contamination when applicable
- A report outlining all data and information collected with recommendations in order to improve air quality and improve the written air quality compliance program when applicable

Mechanical & Natural Ventilation Verification
School Districts rely on natural and mechanical ventilation in order to dilute airborne contaminants in the classrooms with outdoor air. Classrooms are typically designed with unit ventilators or rooftop ventilation, exterior classrooms with operable windows or interior classrooms without operable windows. We find that a thorough ventilation verification helps school districts focus their resources towards specific systems that need improvement in order to sustain proper dilution ventilation.
If any of the following statements are true, you may benefit from a Mechanical & Natural Ventilation Verification
- I hear my mechanical ventilation running but I’m not sure that a lot of air is moving
- My mechanical systems in my building are old and I don’t know if they are functioning as they should
- Some of my classrooms feel stuffy even when the mechanical systems are operating
Typical Mechanical & Natural Ventilation Verification Services
Typical Mechanical & Natural Ventilation Verification Services include
- An inspection of each school in your district measuring mechanical airflow and projecting natural airflow up to every classroom in your district.
- A written report of data analyzed with areas that should be focused on if applicable and a list of recommendations given field conditions.

Airborne Mercury Gym Monitoring
Many school districts throughout the state of New Jersey are discovering that their gym floors were catalyzed with phenol-mercuric-acetate which helped produce a solid-rubber like floor. Over time, this catalyst could break down into elemental mercury which can become airborne and inhaled by its occupants including teachers and students. The decision on whether to replace the gym floors or use techniques to manage airborne concentrations is neither a simple decision nor an inexpensive one. As schools decide on corrective action one of the ways we help school districts in making these kinds of discission is to conduct periodic long-term monitoring of airborne concentrations of mercury during various seasons.
If any of the following statements are true, you may benefit from Airborne Mercury Gym Monitoring
- I don’t know if my gym floor was installed with a mercury-based catalyst and we are getting pressure to find out
- We are on the fence about acting on removing our old gym floor and we need some help in making that decision
- We want to know about the mercury exposure levels that our occupants are experiencing
Typical Airborne Mercury Gym Monitoring Services
If you receive Airborne Mercury Gym Monitoring, you should expect the following
- Visual Inspection of areas where you believe or know that a gym floor poured with a mercury based catalysts exists.
- Spot measurements in areas of concern and in adjacent classrooms for airborne mercury
- Long term monitoring in areas of concern ranging from a couple of hours to a couple of days
- A report detailing findings with information regarding airborne concentration and courses of action in order to better control airborne concentrations
